The Coathangers fifth album ‘Nosebleed Weekend’ has been described by many as their most refined album from the all female punk band, this I cannot comment as I must admit their fifth edition has acted as my introduction to the band and what an introduction it has been.
Unfortunately we live in a world where it is a topic of discussion when the whole band are female and when they play punk music, what is this? Anarchic times! The lead singer even shows a bit of ankle! But in all seriousness as a band they are not just breaking the gender barrier they are kicking the shit out of it, if I could make a comparison I would say The Coathangers are the female Ramones of the 21st century.
Much like the Ramones they are masters of simplicity, their music is by no means complicated nor intricate but who cares? It is catchy, wild and most of all fun.
The album takes a while to find its feet but when it does it is totally worth the wait, this is of course not to say the opening 4 tracks are poor but simply it is clear that they are at their most comfortable when unleashing their explosive power.
Lightning starts to strike from the electric ‘Make It Right’ a cracking start to what is an onslaught of to the book punk rock coming in the form of lead single ‘Nosebleed Weekend’ and the punchy ‘Watch Your Back’.
‘Nosebleed Weekend’ is a classic punk album that is wrapped up in raw energy, heavy riffs and infectious vocals and proves that as a band they may have solidified their sound.
