2016 as a year has been one hell of a ride with a celebrity death toll that seems neverending, death and destruction swept the Middle East and Donald Trump is now in charge of a global superpower. But with all this aside, 2016 was a fantastic year for games with Battlefield 1 providing a much awaited historical WW1 (somewhat) FPS, Titanfall 2 making us feel like badasses and Total War : Warhammer providing us with geek riddled nostalgia.
We are already excited to see what 2017 can bring and where gaming can go so we have compiled a small list of our 5 most anticipated games for 2017.
Mass Effect: Andromeda (Ps4, Xbox One, PC)
Release Date: March 23rd (Possible Delay)
Exciting Factors: Space Exploration, Immersive Universe, Sex with aliens
Mass Effect is still to this day one of my favorite game series for a variety of reasons, mostly for it’s fantastic lore, stunning scenery, gripping story and rewarding combat. But after Mass Effect 3 I was left annoyed, upset and disappointed with the series. I invested so much time into the game from beginning to end for it ultimately not to mean anything which was a huge shame. So as you can imagine when upon hearing that a new Mass Effect was on the horizon I was excited yet skeptical but after watching the two trailers and absorbing any information on Andromeda I could I was left a dribbling mess of excitement.
Mass Effect: Andromeda takes place in the Andromeda galaxy 600 years away from our own Milky Way and is set after the events of ME2. You are a pathfinder by the name of Ryder (who can be played as a female or male), a combat trained but untested explorer leading an expedition into the Helius cluster [in the Andromeda galaxy] to establish a new home for humanity.
Unlike the previous Mass Effects you won’t be starting as a hero and ascending into space Jesus you will be a nobody (sorta) that is yet to prove themselves to their race or the galaxy. It is this element I find most exciting that you will be truly building your own path something that previous ME did not do. Another element that has me excited is the fact that for the first time ME will run in the Frostbite engine, the same engine to run Battlefield and Fifa 17. From the most recent trailer you can already see this how much more alive the game is, particularly when Ryder first lands on the space station. It appears to be the first time Mass Effect has felt living and breathing. However, the facial animations are still absolutely terrible which is something fans reacted to and has been acknowledged by EA and Bioware.
Star Wars Battlefront II (Ps4, Xbox One, PC)
Release Date: Sometime 2017
Exciting Factors: Stunning graphics, Single player, Star Wars Universe
Although much hasn’t been said about what we can expect from Star Wars Battlefront II (we do know it will include a single player) it still has us very excited, even though the first installment was not quite what we wanted it was very visually impressive. We are still uncertain to what trilogy the new game will be based around but EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said during an earnings call that Battlefront 2 will have “bigger and better worlds.” He also added that it will make use of content from “the new movies,” though he didn’t name any outright. This matched with the feedback that DICE and EA have received the next installment should iron out the creases and create the Star Wars shooter that we want.
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
Release Date: March 7th
Exciting Factors: Immersive-open world, Stunning Visuals, Unique Combat
Wildlands arguably one of Ubisoft’s most ambitious projects to date. Ghost recon is going open world and so far it is looking absolutely epic. Set in Bolivia you and your four Ghosts’ mission is to take down the Santa Blanca drug cartel that has turned the South American country into a lawless state. What Ubisoft are boasting is an immersive open world (their largest to date) that reacts to your actions whilst leaving all the options in the players hands, do you help the native population and become their saviours? Or do you aid the paramilitary groups? It is completely up to you, as is the combat, you can either go in guns blazing or use stealth to complete your missions and to take out the bad guys. You also have an arsenal of weapons and vehicles at your disposal be that land, air or sea.
After the surprise success of Watch Dogs 2 we eagerly await what Ubisoft can pull out of the bag for Ghost Recon, judging by WD2 it appears that they have learnt a lot and are making moves to amend their shattered reputation.
Rising Storm 2: Vietnam (PC)
Release Date: Sometime 2017
Exciting Factors: Fantastic soundtrack, realistic gameplay, character customization
Those of you familiar with Rising Storm games will know what to expect, which is a super realistic combat simulation. For the first time the Red Orchestra series is coming to an era of automatic rifles man-portable grenade launchers, oh and not to mention choppers!
Rising Storm games may not be as immersive or as visually stunning in comparison to the likes of Battlefield and Call Of Duty but it cannot be argued that the gameplay is tenfold in terms of realism. The chances are if you get shot you will die, either straight away or from bleeding out. Although, with that said it appears the graphics have had a huge leap from the predecessor games.
Red Dead Redemption 2 (Ps4, Xbox One)
Exciting Factors: Gunslinging action, Compelling storyline, Beautiful and reactive open-world.
We still know very little about RDR2 at the moment other than it will star seven characters and incorporate both single and multiplayer. Rockstar’s official website gives us a small snippet:
“An epic tale of life in America’s unforgiving heartland, the game’s vast and atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience.”
However, earlier in 2016 we were graced with an announcement trailer that boasted the game’s beautiful open world that is filled with dangerous wildlife, gunslingers and shanty towns. Even with this lackluster trailer and tight lips from the guys at Rockstar we are still brimming with excitement as Red Dead Redemption was nothing short of epic and the last GTA was revolutionary, one can only imagine what they are going to bring to the table in RDR2.
