Billie Eilish joins the Barbie team for brand new single and video ‘What Was I Made For?’, from the Mark Ronson-produced ‘Barbie The Album’

You can’t escape The Barbie Movie. The upcoming film, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, is due for release on 21st July and, alongside its release, we will also get ‘BARBIE THE ALBUM’.

The ‘musical companion’ is executively produced by Mark Ronson and will feature Charli XCX, Haim, Ice Spice, Pink Pantheress and many more. The latest offering from the compilation is from Billie Eilish with her first new music of the year.

‘What Was I Made For?’ strips back the flashy production from FINNEAS, a vital part of Eilish’s sound, leaving only her hushed vocals and simple piano. The track functions as a beautiful piano ballad and, though less ambitious than her work on ‘Happier Than Ever’, it feels satisfying and complete.

Lyrically, the track tackles themes presumably raised by Gerwig’s film, asking the pivotal question “What was I made for?” Though it’s likely the song will play a large role in the movie, the track stands alone as a worthy addition to Eilish’s discography, highlighting her fragile vocals without distraction and proving once again how capable a producer FINNEAS is, even without the bells and whistles of other tracks.

The music video was directed by Billie Eilish herself and you can watch it below.
