Boardmasters back on WSL Schedule

By Jay Vilarrubi-Smith

Fistral beach will once again play host to surfers looking to qualify for the World Surf League…

It has been announced that the Boardmasters will this year feature as a QS1000 event on the WSL qualifying series.

The event, which in recent years has grown in notoriety for its music festival, once held a regular spot in Europe’s surf calender.

The likes of Taj Burrow, Bede Durbidge and Occy all have their name on the list of previous Boardmaster’s winners.

However, the event has most recently been featuring as part of the UK Pro Surf Tour having lost its qualifying status.

For many of us, growing up watching the best of British fighting against some of the world’s best surfers was hugely inspirational.

Russell Winter took out the event in 2002, and his performances over many years still lives strong in the memory.

The status of QS1000 somewhat limits the importance of the competition, in comparison to the huge points on offer at other events.

However, the Boardmasters will take place at the start of a run of European Qualifying events so it could still attract some big names.

The event will run from Wednesday 10th till Sunday 14th August and feature a Men’s Open and Women’s Open- alongside the Men’s and Women’s longboard divisions.

Boardmasters Festival Director, Andrew Topham  said:

“We are so stoked to see the return of World Surf League (WSL) sanctioning across all disciplines of our event. This really drives the level of surfing within the UK and will inspire the next generation of British surfers towards competing at the highest level.”

Let’s hope Fistral delivers something more than the 2ft slop it usually provides in August.
