Only a year after their debut album, West London five piece Chubby and the Gang are back with their powerful follow up, ‘The Mutt’s Nuts’.
First track ‘The Mutt’s Nuts’ serves as a taste of how the album of the same name is going to play out. Like someone putting the brick on the accelerator and white knuckling the wheel, Chubby and the Gang throw a 50’s rock style guitar wail over hammering bass and buzzsaw guitars. This is hardcore punk that practically smells of leather and whisky.
Lyrically Chubby and the Gang are working class punk with topics covering landlords, the police and the injustice of the prison system. Musically you can hear inspiration from the 70’s rock of ‘Coming Up Tough’ and ‘Life On the Bayou’, the Rancid style punk of ‘On The Meter’ and the brooding doom of ‘White Rags’.
The sound on this album is so raw and visceral you can almost hear the sweat dripping on the tape and yet there’s a beauty and borderline pop in some of the guitar lines. As well as holding down jobs, Chubby and the Gang tour hard which, coupled with their album ‘The Mutt’s Nuts’, make you brutally aware that they are for real and this passion comes across in every note.
