‘Heavy Male Insecurity’ is the sixth album by Norwegian garage-punk group Death by Unga Bunga. By the time a band reach their sixth album, they usually mellow out or sound a bit tired but Death by Unga Bunga are anything but. ‘Heavy Male Insecurity’ is as fresh as a band’s debut album and is full of infectious energy.
‘Modern Man’ comes out swinging, all rampant drums and buzzsaw guitars with the lyrics informing is what makes a modern man (“he is caring and endearing” if you were wondering). As ‘Modern Man’ wraps up, lead single ‘Egocentric’ swaggers in with a chorus that will work its way in to your head and take residence. This kind of barrage works its way through the whole album with anthem after anthem.
Each song on ‘Heavy Male Insecurity’ is a glorious mix of punk, garage and pop and leads to a joyous album that is made for summer. There are touches of classic rock on ‘Heavy Male Insecurity’ as well with Thin Lizzy style duel guitar solos peppering the record and ‘Faster Than Light’ with a verse that The Who would be proud of. With their heart centred in anthemic garage punk, much like The Hives, Death by Unga Bunga are here for a good time and a long time.
