It may be cold, dark and wintery but San Francisco’s French Cassettes are here to bring the summer to you with their blissful indie pop. After a 5 year writing process, French Cassettes are ready to unleash their sophomore album ‘Rolodex’. Songwriter/ vocalist Scott Huerta has said that writing ‘Rolodex’ was the “best time of (his) life so far” and it shows.
From the almost Beatles like sound of ‘Isn’t Anyone?’ to the indie pop beauty of ‘Sunday Soda’, French Cassettes sit somewhere between Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend by way of Maccabees and it is a truly beautiful blend.
While the percussion may be subtle, inventive yet uncomplicated and the guitars almost wistful in places, the vocals seem to be the main focus here. With plenty of harmonies and playful lyrics, vocalist Scott Huerta shines on this record.
The production on ‘Rolodex’ is beautiful as well. You can almost hear the crackle of the tape as it’s being recorded but it still manages to sound current and bright. It also sounds simple yet layered with each listen giving you something new.
At only 8 tracks long, ‘Rolodex’ leaves you wanting more but it is a perfect slice of indie pop and worth all five of the years it took for it to come to fruition. It’s an album that demands your attention but will reward you with a collection of beautifully written songs
