Although the Sheffield band have only been around for 2 years their latest EP is a stunning tribute to the sound of the 1990’s.
Title track ‘Palisades’ starts with reverb and chorus laden guitar sweeping around setting the stage for the rest of the band to come crashing in. They find their stride early with a sound that wouldn’t be out of place on a Shed 7, Stone Roses or a Charlatans album.
‘Cymbeline’ is an instrumental song that almost comes off as a jam. I personally find it an odd choice to put an instrumental song as one of a 3 track EP and it feels like it needs vocals to save it from feeling a little lost.
As the final strains of ‘Cymbeline’ ebb away, it’s not long before ‘Subversion’ comes crashing in. This song takes a harder, louder approach but still has the chorus pedal set high and the vocals sinking back in the mix to join the wall of sound. It’s the kind of song you can picture throwing yourself about to in a tiny, dirty venue as you get a beer spilled down your front.
As an EP, ‘Palisades’ acts as a reminder of the past but also a look to the future as Halcyon Days give you a taster of what they’re capable of with a chorus pedal and the reverb set to 10. ‘Palisades’ reads like a love letter to the 90’s and the music is played with love and respect for the bands that they take influence from.
