Hippo Campus Return With Announcement Of Their New Album ‘LP3’ & Share Anthemic New Single ‘Boys’
US Indie Rock giants Hippo Campus are back in reverb-drenched style with their melodic new single ‘Boys’. It comes a few months after the release of their acclaimed quarantine EP ‘Good Dog, Bad Dream.’
Sonically, ‘Boys’ feels similar to their 2018 EP ‘Bambi’. Jake Luppen’s vocals are soaring and soothing as he delivers the killer chorus “Kissing boys, missing work, Got hungover from your words”. The arrangement that surrounds him is detailed and intricate, with the 1975-esque sky-high guitar riffs and dense layers of synths and drum machines.
Luppen explains the track is about: “This party I went to where I had all these crazy experiences and then woke up feeling like, I need to change my life right now”.
This sense of longing for a fresh start is reflected in the frenetic atmosphere of the track. The pace changes from slow and sparse at points, to meticulously condensed when the chorus kicks in. Kudos to Caleb Hin for the faultless production.
Hippo Campus have managed to craft their own unique sound in the saturated word of indie rock. Fans of Peach Pit and The Cure alike will find joy in their sweetly sad songwriting. The band have come a long way from their humble self-releasing beginnings. It would be no shock if ‘Boys’ becomes a staple on Radio 1’s A List.
Catch Hippo Campus live in February 2022 in Glasgow, Manchester and London.
