James Alan Ghaleb and Ian Meltzer, who are from Los Angeles, met during their school years and have been close friends ever since. Sharing their common love for music and performing, the two decided to kickstart their band, Valley Boy, in which they had so far released two tracks named ‘Black Cat’ and ‘Cigarette’ towards the end of 2020.
Now with the arrival of their latest single, ‘Sad Girl’, James and Ian expose personal thoughts and feelings through this track. ‘Sad Girl’ takes the listener on a journey of lust, a desire for love, but also disappointment which is portrayed through the lyrics and accompanying music video.
The music video for ‘Sad Girl’ stars James’s now fiancé, Brittany, though footage taken on her iPhone of the interactions between James and herself. Set in Brittany’s bedroom, the intimate film sees both elements of lust and unhappiness throughout, replicating the bittersweet lyrics of the song “I make you smile a little too much.”
James began writing ‘Sad Girl’ because he wanted to touch upon the sadness people can feel when ending new relationships. “This song began after receiving my second ‘we should never talk again’ text from someone I had started seeing” as told by James. I think many of us can relate to this feeling in some way or another, yet we often only associate heartbreak with long-term relationships coming to an end.
