Kaboli, Plum Jr. & GRIN Blew The Roof Off FIVES

It was a suspiciously cold Saturday night for our latest string of CLUNK presents shows in Falmouth. However, that didn’t stop a solid crowd turning up to enjoy some quality music. The wind may have blown cold but the crowds were warmed up by the intimate venue FIVES, one of Cornwall’s hubs for live music. As ever the space provided a perfect setting for a night of live music, boasting Cornwall’s ever expanding music scene.

We took things down a notch in comparison to our other gigs, which were on the more hectic side. Although the music on offer was still of a high caliber. We brought the noisy math/garage rock sounds of GRIN (their debut show), the sickly sweet, indie-punk barrage that is Plum Jr. and the shoegaze, psychedelic wonder that is Kaboli. We also had a DJ set from Inbetween Days to close the night off with some fantastic jams, spanning a huge variety of genres.

Opening the night was the newly formed GRIN who came through with a dangerous ferocity, a real surprise as it was their debut show. They came out to make a mark on Falmouth and this set certianly did. It was full of crunching, heavy riffs that seemed unrelenting in their energy. The performance showed great potential and we will be watching GRIN with real excitement.

Following this was the sweet, indie-punk sounds of Plum Jr. With each performance Ellie (Plum Jr.) seems to grow more confident in her music, it is great to watch. Ellie and her cohorts came out swinging and had the eager crowd cheering and hollering at every moment. The fusion of honest songwriting, sugar coated vocals and shoegaze\punk sound is something to be adored. With a full band Plum Jr. sound has been revamped and that extra level of power has been installed. It was a great performance that has us eager for more.

Closing the night off was the enigmatic Kaboli who dance mysteriously in a wide spectrum of genres. Ever since seeing them at The Great Estate we have been eager to have them unleashed in a small venue. Their music branches across psychedelic, shoegaze, post rock and alt-rock, yet still remains wholly fresh and unique. It really is a full and rich experience, each musician is at the top of their game and it shows live. It’s a powerful sound that rocked through FIVES, leaving the audience agape. Kaboli are like a rare animal, that is often found lurking in the shadows, but when witnessed people are in awe of them. They are an incredibly underrated Cornish band whose sound is brilliantly original.
