‘Upside Down’ is the latest single from South London’s Giya and it serves as the follow up to her 2020 EP, ‘Almost Real’. Having honed her craft as part of South West London’s Lonesome Dog Collective, Giya has already got credentials before she’s played a note.

Of her latest single, Giya says “Upside Down is an honest account of what people my age get up to day to day, weekend to weekend; I’ve just proposed it in a slightly more playful way”. Musically, ‘Upside Down’ blends together Giya’s smooth and pretty vocals which wouldn’t be out of place in a jazz club with a drum beat which feels like straight hip hop and bass and synth from an r&b song.

All of these aspects fuse together to create a song that almost feels like a 90’s r&b pop song but brought right up to date. The laziness of the drums and bass perfectly mirroring the lyrics as Giya sings “coming down and I don’t want to be round family”. With lyrics we can all feel to set to a track that feels like a lazy Sunday, ‘Upside Down’ is a relatable and beautiful track. Feeling like a more jazz tinged Jorja Smith, Giya is a future star in the making.
