Lurking somewhere between late 90s radio-rock and Blue Album-era Weezer, the newest LP from Mom Jeans comes packed with enough ear candy to give you a filling
On latest installment, Crybaby (On The Phone), vocalist Eric Butler’s West-coast warble meets pop songwriting brilliance. Pining for respite from a relentless ex, issues of heartbreak and longing are sifted through the Berkeley collective’s cheeky, anecdotal lens. “Oh baby, where do we go from here? You really messed me up / I’ll load all my stuff in the back of Brandon’s SUV.”
The single comes with an equally addictive video in tow. Sitting somewhere between Scott Pilgrim and Stranger Things, and directed by Zach Miller, it finds a honey-toned Butler searching for his own form of escapism. It follows three years after Mom Jeans’ second LP ‘Puppy Love‘ and was recorded, along with the rest of the record, at New Jersey’s Barber Shop Studios with producer Brett Romnes (The Front Bottoms, Oso Oso, Dogleg). It’s the first time the band had a proper, top-to-bottom studio experience, and it shows.
Delectably moreish and demanding multiple spins, this is Mom Jeans at their sweetest. The video for ‘Crybaby (On The Phone)‘ is out now and the new record is yours from February 25th.
