London indie trio headboy announce their debut EP, ‘Was It What You Thought’ with the loveable and subtly complex single ‘Cement‘
headboy played a sold-out headline show at The Windmill, Brixton last night in celebration of their new single. Once you listen to it, you’ll see why.
‘Cement’ is an honest, beautiful and complex indie pop song and should get a lot more people listening to headboy. The track has a pull to it and, while not flashy, it draws me in completely. Perhaps this is due to the vocal performance from Mars West, whose innocent voice is deceptively engaging. They hold the band’s sound together with a perfect balance between confidence and fragility.
West’s voice is backed by some solid instrumentation. The track opens with a simple, quiet guitar line and a subtle yet very effective drum beat. The way these drums (Oli Birbeck) brilliantly build the tension of the track, driving the momentum without ever showing off is Reminiscent of Vampire Weekend; their technique fits right into this sound.
The unique part of this track is just how diverse it is. You could be fooled into predicting headboy’s sound from the first minute of the track but, somehow, by the last minute, this sound has developed into a dreamy psychedelic soundscape that will make you forget what the intro even sounded like.
