Is there anything nicer than guitar noise grizzled in distortion and Stephanie Phillips’ psych-drone vocals swirling around you? Absolutely not. Give us a bucketful of Big Joanie any day, this sistah punk is saving us from despair.
“The Ronettes filtered through 80s DIY and riot grrrl” is Big Joanie in a soundbite. Dream combo. Last November the band released their debut album ‘Sistahs’, a salute to sisterhood and female friendship. With this sentiment blazing under their songs, it comes as no surprise that the punk trio are big believers in the power of community, be it coaching new talent at Girls Rock London or launching the ‘Stop Rainbow Racism’ campaign.
