Indie-rock group CIEL drop dreamy new single Back To The Feeling ahead of their new EP, Not In The Sun, Nor In The Dark

There is something very alluring about CIEL’s sound. With the combination of distorted guitars, dreamy atmosphere and youthful vocals, this new single contains everything that makes the band great.

There is an ominous feeling surrounding Back To The Feeling; from the second the synth fades in and the driving bassline and drums start up, it feels like something big is coming. It is a nice surprise then, when the soft-spoken vocals slip perfectly on top.

This mix of sounds is what keeps the track interesting. The instrumentation of the chorus could, if amped up a bit, be from a classic shoegaze track, while these lovely vocals sound straight from an indie-pop group like Kero Kero Bonito. It’s moody, but still a lot of fun.

A highlight is the final section of the track in which the guitars and synths clash in a distorted frenzy that sounds like a swarm of electronic bees. It would be interesting to see the band experiment more with these sounds.
