Picture this: summer has swept away the COVID cobwebs, you have a piña colada in hand on a soft white sandy beach with an obtrusively large sun hat on, and not a care in the world. You’re rocking it, boo. You’re styling and the whole beach knows it. The only thing needed to pull the scene together? A succulent summer single of course!
Enter Cornwall’s very own loveable duo Roguey Roads, who have swanned into the scene with their first single ‘Hey Jude‘ – a fun, fizzy tonic of a track that sweeps through the senses with a carefree joy, gently swaying listeners’ heads from side to side with simple, supple serenity. Bright, boppy and bringing with it a genuine sense of ease, it’s hard not to imagine brothers Rhys and Gus performing the song on the same beach as our hypothetical opening statement person with their own glasses of bright and exciting cocktails, grinning down at the audience in a way that says “everything is fine and we’re at peace with things…care for a drink?”.
Summer vibes practically radiate from ‘Hey Jude‘, from the moment that plucky guitars start to shimmy about in the track’s flirtatious opening to the bright and brassy mid sections, you can easily envision the beaming faces of the band as they bob to and fro to lyrics that portray not-so-unwelcome nostalgia for a lost lover or friend, calling them back for one last dance in the late summer sun or quiet drink in a beachside bar. A buttery-smooth saxophone solo at the song’s apex pulls the whole image together. It quite honestly brings a feeling of melancholy with it, as if there were a little longing going on behind the bouncy boppy arrangements, but not in a bad way. Not at all.
Pubs, clubs, festivals, Rhys and Gus have practically seen them all since they toed their way into the scenes back in 2017. Since then their reputation has grown eagerly as the unwashed masses cotton onto the fact that these boys clearly have something special. Years of songwriting, recording and producing prior to their formulation of Roguey Roads have started the two off on stronger footing than anybody could hope for, and the outcome of all their years of experience is the single we now have sitting at our summer playlists’ doorsteps.
