The newest track from post-punk three-piece Social Haul brings us ‘Wet Eyes’. Social Haul was born when TRAAMS’ bassist Leigh Padley found that the yearning to create music overcame him after TRAMMS had been on a break since 2017. After touring with the likes of Car Seat Headrest and IDLES, Padley has more than taste for the glory of performing, so it’s safe to say that they have a promising future.
‘Wet Eyes’ transports you to a place where music rules and unadulterated chaos is king. It’s a non-stop, striking tune that leaves you yearning for a sweaty pub mosh-pit. The track is the first taste of the band; Padley says, “’Wet Eyes’ was inspired by an overheard conversation in the pub. The fellas were riffing on the inherent obsolescence of all human skill and the inevitable deterioration of their individual dreams. They concluded that it was in fact quite liberating to be but a cog in a machine and seemed to recognise their fortune in this understanding, all the while haphazardly navigating their flippant political leanings and the football scores. They had a good night I think, I thought it was quite nice”.
The ultimately voyeuristic nature of Social Haul’s ‘Wet Eyes’ bring us closer to the past that I imagine we all miss. The peaking over the bus seat to read the stranger in front of you text messages, the overhearing of passionate arguments of a couple opposite you on the train or, in fact, listening on two blokes in the pub debating the meaning of life over the football. Social Haul bring us closer to the things we never realised we took for granted, the secret watching that comes naturally with human nature. Social Haul envelop you into their pure noise, bringing you the stories you never knew you wanted to know and they do it with such flair and charm, you can’t help but fall deeply into their arms.
