The streets of Liverpool are rife with untouchable talents, bands and artists. In a recent chat with a friend from the area, I was informed that they have a sort of ‘creative cafe’, a place where people from the scenes can all meet together and stir the honeypot in a manner that would water the mouth of any hungry label executive looking for his next proverbial meal. Crazy right? With such a bright and colourful collection of artists all supporting one another and giving the north-east a well deserved boost of pride and popularity, it’s hard not to see why artists such as Superlate are garnering such impressive chunks of success from the off. Speaking of which, have you sunk your teeth into their newest single ‘Petals’? It’s rather good.
Slick, summery and unassuming in its form, the 3-minute sophomore single from the pearly pop producer offers something light and refreshing to go alongside the full-bodied aroma of their first release. Delicate contemporary percussion snaps, crackles and pops amid pleasant pads; bright bleeps and bloops and an airy vocal feature from Lou Cas lifting the track’s palette to a pleasant level of softness that carries the listener from tip to tail without breaking a sweat.
There’s simplicity to the approach of the track’s form: drums stand starkly at the forefront in an borderline imposing way, keeping the vibe pepped like an overly minty toothpaste. The meandering strings soften the timbre of the general soundscape, almost inspiring a sense of luxury about the piece.
Of the single, Mavi (AKA Superlate) says: “Writing petals was one of the most natural experiences I’ve ever had when it comes to songwriting. It truly was a day of goofing about and making noise for fun. We were at a great time in our lives, going to lots of festivals in the summer, and I can hear the energy and positivity of a great summer with your mates come through massively in the track.”
‘Petals’ is a far cry from its preppy, poppy predecessor ‘Diamonds’, the disco inspired breakout track that garnered 10,000 streams in only two weeks – a feat that is as impressive as it is staggering. With this in mind, there’s little doubt as to the aptitude of Superlate‘s skills behind the DAW. If they keep up the momentum for time to come, they’ll surely be on the way to a bright and shiny career among the greats.
