Montreal based Sweet Roger has released the new single ‘Pay Me’ a surly blues track with country and folk influences, reminiscent of Johnny Cash and Jake Bugg.
The song begins with a lusciously picked bassy guitar that gets joined by a determined driving beat then Sweet Rogers unnerving rich vocal comes in with lyrics that immediately set the scene. Towards the end of the first verse a beautiful, twangy slide guitar comes in that fully cements the mid-century country vibe. The song, having been inspired by an image found at a flea market in Los Angeles, has become a wonderfully ominous and raw track.
A story of someone who has not only survived but possibly thrived in a harsh world, this could be the perfectly moody ode to 2020 that we all need.
