Recent concept EP the ‘Et Suite’ musically encapsulates isolated recording sessions’ alien process. Now, this is a concept.
Following the release of their 2020 Album ‘Eddie’, the truly unique and innovative project provides a definitive sequel by both expanding and reimagining their featured album track ‘ET’ into something otherworldly and reinvented.
The EP is a fifteen-minute space odyssey, offering various interpretations to the original song, ‘ET’.
“Contrary to how we’ve recorded in the past, every element of this was recorded in isolation. There were lots of discussions and listening sessions but as far as the recording process went, each instrument was recorded completely independently. This ended up playing into the themes of the music. The ET Suite is really a space-traveling journey from one isolated planet to the next and that transportation to different spaces is exactly how the creative process worked.” – Chris Vincent (Trombone Player)
The multinational band met during their first week as students in the jazz program at McGill University back in 2011. Beginning as an instrumental act, they capitalised on every gig they could and released EP’s ‘GLAM’ and ‘LIFT’ before unveiling 2017’s full-length debut, ‘Uncommon Good’. Packing out headline tours, and gracing the stages of international festivals, Busty And The Bass are purveyors of modern funk, jazz, and soul who have really blown the door off of concept tracks with this new release.
First featuring the original track from album ‘Eddie’, ‘ET’ really encapsulates an out-of-this-world synth sound similar to that found in instrumentals on a sci-fi film. A catchy, boppy, R&B jam with many musical elements overlapped, coming to a climbing peak of pure musical indulgence.
‘ET Part II: Venus’ gives us a slower, silky sounding track that combines soulful vocals, psychedelic guitar riffs, and horns. It’s truly an intergalactic-sounding track that traverses the musical spectrum.
‘ET Part III: Jupiter’ by this point, expect to be blown away by the talent in this EP. An effortless transition from track two to track three, yet at the same time offering a fully instrumental funk bop that sounds totally different from the last. Short but very sickly sweet, ‘ET Part III: Jupiter’ feels like a perfect interlude after being taken on a true journey of each track so far, just as you grasp onto the climbing melody you’re thrown right into track four, ‘ET Part IV: Neptune’.
What gives the impression of the start of a dark, deep, raspy track continues into a gorgeous overlay of whispers and beautiful vocals that climbs into the original track’s chorus.
‘ET Part V: Mars’ tilts you off-kilter with erratic jazz beats, truly throwing you in a totally different direction, but halfway through the track expect to feel like you’re floating through space with gripping synths and gorgeous beats before being woken up by the sound of your alarm. The kind of dream you wake up from knowing you went on an incredible journey, but not quite being able to put your finger on where.
This EP has been curated in perfect formation. Starting with the familiar, steady R&B soul, to silky smooth funk, a short break from vocals to get truly lost in saxophone, soulful whispers, and ending in erratic jazz-beats and synth, the perfect crescendo to an EP that is truly out of this world.
