Emerging Midlands band The Novus Announce the highly anticipated debut EP + share new single ‘Castaway’
Having been one of very few bands to have completed a tour in late 2020 (socially distanced of course), Birmingham indie-punk outfit The Novus have unleashed their new single Castaway from their upcoming debut EP ‘Thaleia Standing’ which is released on June 18th.
‘Castaway’ is about the idea of taking care of yourself despite being taught to place other people’s needs first. The Novus’ bassist Tyla Challenger explains: “‘Castaway’ touches heavily on how we’re never taught how to properly take care of ourselves. As much as it’s okay to not be okay, it’s ingrained into a whole generation to be ‘nice’ to everyone around us without actually learning how to accept & look after our own physical and mental wellbeing. It results in a society filled with toxic masculinity, unidentified mental health issues & huge suicide rates”
The video for Castaway is shot by Jacky P (AKA Jack Parker); former presenter of BBC Introducing WM and touring DJ for Scarlxrd and it sees the band playing behind an altar with vocalist Connor Hill almost as a preacher, extolling the virtues of self-care. The song itself sees The Novus explore a more psychedelic sound than their previous indie rock, coming across like The Doors and early U2 getting into a fight in a grungy club. It’s not hard to see why they’ve already garnered support from the likes of BBC Radio 6 and Radio X.
Having already toured in England, played in Paris, and recorded an EP, it’ll be very interesting to see what The Novus can do when barriers such as lockdown aren’t in the way!
