Recently the AMATA at Falmouth University opened its doors the legendary Falmouth band Tinnedfruit and exceptional Brighton duo SKiNNY MiLK. It was a night with much excitement and anticipation due to the notoriety around both bands energetic and ferocious energy. Both bands had the bands going wild, bringing the expected raucous.

Warming everyone up was SKiNNY MiLK, a duo hailing from the cobbled shores of Brighton. Their sound can be likened to the bands such as Thee Oh Sees, Wand and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. It’s a barrage of sonic riffs and thumping percussion drenched in reverb. Watching bassist Johnny Hart flail and wriggle around stage was a sight to behold. As a band they are a tight unit that is unrelenting in its power. We can’t wait to have them back in Cornwall again (hopefully soon).

After a quick swapover the Tinnedfruit boys sheepishly made their way to the stage and without hesitation began to play. Their sound was as tight as ever with their familiar garage-rock sound filling the AMATA. However, It was interesting to watch band that oozed confidence in smaller shows seem a little reserved. Almost everyone in Falmouth has a story about Tinnedfruit, a band that is renown for its mental live performances. Most of these shows however have been in smaller venues where they are at eye-level with the crowd, it is here where this band clearly strives. This isn’t to say the show was bad, far from it, it just lacked that element of spontaneity. I was forever waiting to have Dan Ledley invade the crowd, having us raise him above our heads like the fuzzy deity that he is. However, the chemistry between the guys on stage was endearing and utterly infectious, they were having a lot of fun and it was clear to see. The pinnacle of the show was towards the end as they busted into a reverb laden tangent that saw the crowd absolutely erupt, a huge pit opened which even I managed to get involved in (shoutout to my sister for holding my camera).
Overall it was a brilliant night that saw one of Falmouth’s most talked about bands remind everyone why they are so notorious. Hopefully in 2019 we can get even more from Tinnedfruit.
