Last Friday saw a surprise social media tease from Stockholm’s own narcotic-powered post-punks, Viagra Boys, telling us to “buy a calendar and wake up next Wednesday” and boy, oh boy, did they drop a scorcher to take us back to the shrimp shack with.
‘Ain’t Nice’ is the big, bad, bass-driven banger of a lead single off their just announced sophomore release ‘Welfare Jazz’, dropping via independent label YEAR0001 and expected in January 2021.
It’s full of the usual Viagra Boys attitude, caught somewhere between drug-induced psychosis and 70’s porn soundtrack swagger
Starting like a vinyl record halfway through a track, it whirs into life before the bass smacks you in the jaws, ushering in lead singer Sebastian Murphy slurring in with his standard brand of absurdist lyrical content. This track sees him focus on looking for a new girlfriend (I think), primarily for storage of his collection of electronics and vintage calculators (as you do).
The track just stomps along relentlessly with additional sax stabs, intense synths and, what can only be described as a tune typed out on one of Sebastian’s aforementioned classic Casio’s, littered throughout. It just keeps pounding on with that bone-shaking bass, typical manic vocals before one final ‘It ain’t nice’ leaves you in silence.
If this is the kind of frenzied, split-personality style of post-punk we can expect on the follow up to their excellent 2018 release ‘Street Worms’ buy me a ticket, because I’m ready to take this ride.
