Indie is one of those genres that can have a habit of falling in to the same grooves and rhythms so I’m always left wondering where the genre can go to keep fresh. Luckily, Denmark’s Yung are here to show us a sign of the future with their sophomore album ‘Ongoing Dispute’.
While opener ‘Autobiography’ starts off as any good indie record would with twangy guitar and simple drums, it soon becomes apparent that they’re taking influence from other genres as well. With the kind of overdrive and screeching solos that would be more common on an old (pre-Iris) Goo Goo Dolls record and vocals to match, it’s not just a paint by numbers indie record.
‘Dismantled’ wouldn’t be out of place on a Sonic Youth album with it’s meandering verse and heavy, distorted chorus. ‘Such A Man’ seems more like a single from Kings of Leon with its pounding drums and bass and jangly guitar. ‘Unresolver’ starts with a verse that has the quirky guitar and Gang of Four style drums before exploding in to a Nirvana style chorus. Ongoing Dispute is an album that displays the band’s eclectic tastes while carving out a sound of their own.
It’s this eclectic influence that keeps each track fresh and makes for a fuller sounding album. If ‘Ongoing Dispute’ is an indication of things to come, I’m all ears.
