Hey, I’m a photographer and writer based between Reading and Cornwall. I’ve been going to gigs since my 2016 indie phase (which admittedly I’m still in) but also love rock and punk. I love taking photographs which capture the atmosphere of live music.
Nottingham indie four-piece release first single ‘O Calamity’ since their acclaimed debut album ‘Drive to Goldenhammer’ in March
Despite being their newest single, ‘O Calamity’ pre-dates Divorce‘s inception in 2021. Written six years ago by co-vocalists Tiger Cohen-Towell and Felix Mackenzie-Barrow, ‘O Calamity”s delicate and stripped back nature is retrospective and represents their earliest song writing with the added benefit of hindsight. Listeners can comprehend how their relationship as songwriters and bandmates has evolved since the song was first conceived.
The guitar and soft, tender lyrics conjure images of warm summer evenings watching the sunset. The track also contains country and indie-Americana nuances that have become re-concurring motifs that define Divorce’s unique sound. These elements combined create a hazy and daydreamy experience, coaxing the listener into feeling nostalgic.
Now feels a perfect time for the band to release the track, with its gentle nature offering a moment of respite, a chance to step back, reflect and reconnect. This is undoubtedly needed for the band after spring was packed with sold out headline shows, including their largest to date at London’s KOKO, as well as support slots with Mumford & Sons in the US, not to mention playing at festivals such as Glastonbury.
Tiger Cohen-Towell shares: “We always thought it was a beautiful song and kept it in our pile of material, but didn’t include it on the album simply because of how long ago it had been written. This feels like a good time to stop hanging onto it, so here it is; a snapshot of our past written by the two of us, scarcely more than teenagers at the point of creation.”
With the glowing reception of their debut album and energetic live performances Divorce have cemented their status as one of the most exciting alternative indie bands, building a global fanbase. ‘O Calamity’ is a much more personal take, therefore credit must be given to the band for being vulnerable in showcasing their earlier work to an ever growing audience. It is an example of beautifully crafted music with a wistful quality.
The video to accompany the song is a montage of intimate moments from the band’s recent tours.
