‘Vinegar Swimming Pool’ is a versatile groove-based track and a valuable addition to debut album ‘In Purgatory’ out now!
After dropping a double-header of promising singles this year, World News drop the last single from their debut album ‘In Purgatory’. Garnering praise from NME, Rolling Stone, and KEXP’s John Richards, World News have displayed an adroit approach to guitar driven indie pop. Yet, ‘Vinegar Swimming Pool’ features a lurking, muscular riff doubled by the bass, thus sitting on the heavier side of the indie sphere. With the first four singles being more melodically focused, ‘Vinegar Swimming Pool’ has edge; a half-time heaviness that really offsets it from their other releases.
Exploring more groove-based arrangements (also audible in ‘The Way It Goes’) seems to be where World News shine the brightest. Diverting from the traditionalist vocal approach on the prior singles, Alex Evans displays his versatility. In ‘Vinegar Swimming Pool’ Evans hints at Les Claypool’s ironic vocal grain, before launching into a guttural belch subdued by reverb and depth in the mix.
After the second of these eruptions, the instrumental quells its edge, venturing into a jangly moment more aligned with their previous releases. Immediately after this, however, they lean further into their darker side, developing the original riff with a chromatic ascension that jars in a fascinating way. The band also sounds tight. Even on the record, they sound considerably more rhythmically locked in than their contemporaries. The relative curveball ‘Vinegar Swimming Pool’ is in relation to their earlier work prophesizes a debut album of depth and variety.
