Drummer first and foremost, but will happily give an opinion on anything rock, indie and punk related.
Wunderhorse’s new single ‘The Rope’ remains familiar whilst capturing the raw grit of their live shows
It’s safe to say that new British guitar music of today is pretty much defined by the raw and visceral live sound of Wunderhorse. Jacob Slater and his gang are on top of the indie hierarchy at present… so what does their new track have to offer?
Their latest attempt, ‘The Rope‘, is a track that continues their efforts to capture their captivating, gritty live performances. The tune, recorded at RAK Studios in London with Loren Humphrey, capitalises on the received success of their sophomore LP ‘Midas’, that was released last year. For me, and many others, this song strikes heavy resemblance to the album titled single ‘Midas’, as both songs share a similar (if not identical) guitar progression and overall groove. The lyrics and delivery of Jacob Slater is textbook for Wunderhorse, harrowing yet somehow empowering, which is what I think attracts the average indie listener to Wunderhorse.
Although I don’t believe this track greatly improves on their previous album, or their sound generally, it is another brilliantly received single from the band on the whole. Wunderhorse are beginning to acquire a knack for writing anthemic indie tunes in their unique style, which is a formula they will obviously seek to replicate. However, I do hope they branch out ever so slightly on their sound, and perhaps not reuse chord progressions as blatantly as this…
With my obligatory dose of music snobbery out of the way, I do, infact, recommend you listen to this new single and, if you can, catch this lot live. Wunderhorse are most definitely the most exciting indie prospects to come out of the UK in a little while, so time to get those bragging rights in.
