We chat to the Spring, Texas native Effy Harvard about breakups that inspired her debut single, musical influences and more
Effy Harvard is a brand new artist coming straight outta Spring, Texas. Her blend of sassy lyrics with country rock influence (see Dolly Parton or Loretta Lynn) creates a sound that is fun, full of attitude, and filled to the brim with that all American sound. Her debut single ‘Her Boots’ releases recently and showcases the emerging artists confidence, leaving us wanting to know more about the person behind the music.
Kieran: Firstly, thank you for taking the time to chat with us! How have you been?
Effy: I have been good, traveling often! Flying back to the states from Portugal as I write this. Excited to hibernate for a few days when I am back.
Kieran: You live in Spring, Texas. What’s life like down that way?
Effy: I am very attached to Texas, and I think about moving back often, I live in California these days. Growing up in Spring, TX was a life revolving around sports, I played softball for 9 years and was on a travel team. I’d always be outdoors or playing piano, just waiting till I had the house to myself to sing my lungs out.
Kieran: What’s a misconception about living in Texas and one stereotype that is real?
Effy: Texas is so large, you can be driving for eleven hours and still be in the state lines, it’s wild. The main misconception I’ve been asked is if I’d take a horse to school, I wish! A car or bus was the norm for myself, but out in the country, it’s a reality for some! A stereotype that is typically true is southern hospitality. The energy is warm, saying hello to anyone passing by, opening the door for each other, it’s a special place.

Kieran: Now, let’s chat about your music. You released your debut single ‘Her Boots’ this month and have had a very positive response. How does this feel?
Effy: The reactions are all surprises to me because I have been so shy about singing in front of people, I haven’t really had much of a consensus on my voice before releasing my debut. Having such a fear of rejection, I ran away from this dream as long as I could, but experiencing the speed of life took away that option. I’m so happy I allowed opportunity in, and everyone’s encouragement and streams means the world to me. Really.
Kieran: What was the inspiration behind ‘Her Boots’ and is it a true story?!
Effy: Variations of this story are true. Some dating stories I have are quite shocking, and pulling inspiration from finding something that isn’t mine, infidelity, and the aftermath it can do to your self confidence, brought this song to life. The message of the song is one I wish I knew and had in my early 20s: Standing in your power, and not allowing anyone to doubt yourself, not even for a moment. Those mistakes belong to them, not me.

Kieran: How long have you been writing and recording music?
Effy: I’ve been writing as soon as I could pick up a pen, writing short stories to poetry. I’ve always been very emotional, and observant of the world around me, feeling it all whether I wanted to or not. Singing has been a solo journey of taking thousands of voice memos, and over time listening back to improve my sound. The recording of “Her Boots,” was the first day I have ever recorded professionally! I got an unreal opportunity in Nashville, we wrote and recorded 3 songs with a full band and all in 4 days, and with people I was meeting for the first time. The player’s and writer’s talent was above and beyond, and I feel so lucky I got to bring a dream to life.
Kieran: What artists do you take influence from?
Effy: My sound is very 60s, I am very inspired by Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline’s instrumentals and comedic songwriting. I connect to all genres through emotion (textbook pisces), I love intensity: Bright Eyes, Lana Del Rey, Linda Ronstadt. Took me awhile to figure out what exactly I wanted my sound to me, I really do love it all, but oldies feel like home.
Kieran: And lastly, what else is in the pipeline for 2024?
Effy: In early talks of filming a music video for “Her Boots,” in Tennessee, hoping to spend more time over there creating! The second song in the pipeline is my personal favorite. The song hit me like a truck, my hand could barely keep up with the lyrics coming through my mind, it feels like a perfect song to arrive in summertime. Thank y’all again for seeing me, and all the support.
