On the night of the release of new single ‘NO COMMENT,’ KNEECAP brought their political and wildly energetic party of a live show to Bristol
It’s hard to put into words what it’s like being at a KNEECAP show, especially one in Bristol’s Prospect Building. As opener Miss Kaninna pointed out, we were in the city that tore down the Colston statue, so the reception to one of the most politically relevant and active bands right now was huge.
The band started with their now well-known black screen with the words “Israel is still committing genocide against the Palestinian people”, followed by a message about the complicity of the UK government, ending with “Speak up. Take action. Free Palestine.”
Following their key message, the 3 members took to the stage complete with moody lighting, hoods, sunglasses, and, of course the iconic Irish Flag balaclava. The crowd had embraced the look and a sea of balaclavas cheered back as the set began.
The whole set was pure energy and both crowd and performers fed off each other the whole way through. That night was the release of KNEECAP latest single ‘No Comment’ which was played for the first time since it’s release to the cheers of a sold-out Prospect Building. It was a great reception to the song, taking the band’s sound in a more dancy route for the next album. Their other singles ‘The Recap’ and ‘Sayonara’ were both played that night, with equally positive enthusiasm.
Between songs there was the usual gig chat as well as some poignant messages about the Palestinian genocide as well as British politics. At one point chants of “Free Palestine” and “Fuck Keir Starmer” echoed through the walls and into the industrial estate beyond, followed, or course, by the well-loved “get your Brits out”.
United by music and politics, KNEECAP brought together like-minded people to the party of the year. Raising money for the “Filton 24” (Bristol-based Palestine activists facing trial and currently on hunger strike) alongside their own merch and selling prints made by local artists in each city they visit, this band can clearly put their money where their mouth is and not only give people a fantastic show but give back in any way possible.
Hit after hit rolled off the stage and into the night, leaving the crowd sweating and somehow with more energy than when they arrived.
