Drummer first and foremost, but will happily give an opinion on anything rock, indie and punk related.

Bristol’s KUDOS and Falmouth’s Syrupp joined forces in Chintz’s Underland for a night of psych, noise and chaos

‘Twas another fair autumn evening on the southern Cornish coast, where a gang of sprightly Bristolian rockers joined forces with an all-Cornish band to form a highly intoxicating concoction of passionate musical performance at the Chintz Underland. I, amongst many in the crowd, found myself utterly blown away by again the sheer calibre of talent the small town of Falmouth produces and attracts.

Opening act Syrupp sufficiently heated the crowd up to near boiling point, before the main event KUDOS took the stage and delivered a wildly magnificent display of melodic indie goodness. I was privileged enough to witness it all and shall recount it to you now in as much minute description as my busy schedule allows. Here goes!

Syrupp

Syrupp kicked off the night in spectacular fashion. Guitarist Finley led the way of the band’s superbly strange psyched out stoner sound. The noise is rather reminiscent of a tripped-out hippie trainwreck, despite the band being clearly extremely well rehearsed. Dominant bass from Dylan shook the wall of the Underland, whilst the drums were sufficiently pounded into oblivion, guitars were slashed and vocals roared.

The crowd were not left out of the fun at all during the process, with Syrupp working the crowd with mastery, utilising big buildups and dynamics to fulfil their promise of enduring and unapologetic psych-rock. If I were to liken their sound to anything, I’d recommend listening to ‘Teenage Gizzard’ by King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard.

Syrupp are a band that are still yet to get fully into their groove, but If you see them on a local bill in Falmouth, I can assure you they are well worth a watch, with their stage presence alone keeping my eyes firmly on them. I am also delighted to report that other members of the audience who were moving with more effort and bravado than me were just as swept up in the Syrupp sweetness as I was deep down.

I recommend all psych, hippie and punk rock lovers in Falmouth to give Syrupp a chance, maybe a dash of it on your pancakes in the morning or even a slosh in your coffee if you’re feeling cheeky. They were Grade A.

KUDOS

After the remnants of Syrupp were mopped from the stage, a whopping 6 Bristolians then commandeered the Underland and began plucking away at their instruments, speaking a fantastically charming and hypnotic alt-rock language that stirred the audience into a frenzy.

The energy was electric and the performance of the two vocalists was truly captivating. After a brief chat with singer Louis (pictured entertaining the crowd above), I actually learnt that both him and Amy were in fact standing in for this gig. They did an outstanding job to say the very least. If any Bristol bands are looking for a frontman or frontwoman, I think these two could serve you very well indeed.

Despite very little room to move on the cozy Underland stage and a severe case of the wandering bass drum, KUDOS have an insanely promising sound. Their tune ‘Far Away’ is an absolute banger and a brilliant showcase tune for what this gang are capable of. As you can see from the photographs, they also worked the crowd brilliantly and made a lasting impression on the Falmouth scene as a band from out of town. Their attitude was theatrical and all about showmanship, whilst also showing ample love and appreciation to the local scenesters – something that I am a big fan of!

That wraps up another unforgettable evening of music at Chintz Underland. The people were cool, the speakers were loud, the drinks were sort of cheap. Will I be back again? Of course.
