Self Esteem announces new album ‘A Complicated Woman’ alongside single ‘Focus is Power’
Following the success of her Mercury Prize-nominated album ‘Prioritise Pleasure’ in 2021, Self Esteem is back, announcing her latest album ‘A Complicated Woman’ via Polydor Records. The album is set to release on 25th April.
Self Esteem has been gathering a legion of devoted fans since the release of her debut ‘Compliments Please’ in 2019 and is now bringing back her musical trademarks, exploring the complexities of womanhood in the modern era.
According to Self Esteem, the album is about taking control of your life, an idea she explores through the use of choral vocals constructed of maily women which she describes to be “a community of people”. On the album, she collaborates with artists like Nadine Shah, Moonchild Sanelly and Sue Tompkins amongst others and wants listeners to “hear and feel the connection”.
The album’s essence and message of taking control can be summed up in her newest single ‘Focus is Power’. The track explores reclaiming power in a male-dominated world with the choir of backing singers blending effortlessly with her strong voice: “We’re taught to take it in our stride / Laugh it off, take it on the chin just right / Don’t be too loud or too quiet”.
New album ‘A Complicated Woman’ is out on 25th April via Polydor Records.
