London’s rising indie outfit Terra Twin chat to us ahead of their forthcoming ‘Static Separation’ EP, out February 6th via Dance To The Radio
We first caught wind of the London based band (that features Rings Of Power’s Maxim Baldry) with their ‘Head Leaking’ EP. It was a delightful collection of guitar driven indie that was awash with psychedelic and garage rock elements. Fast forward a year and the band are gearing to release their second EP ‘Static Separation’. An EP that perhaps offers a more refined and mature sound, based off singles ‘Again And Again’, ‘The Recogniser’, and ‘Crooked’.
After having or ears tickled by the new tracks we wanted to find out more about the new EP, what inspired it, and a lot more! Guitarist Lewis Spear sat down to entertain our questions!
Kieran: Hey all, thanks so much for chatting with us today! How have we been?
Lewis: So far so good. We’ve been getting ready for our tour this month.
Kieran: It’s no secret that the UK winters are tough.. so what are you doing to keep the blues away?
Lewis: Mainly writing – but also a combination of risotto, nail polish, Gossip Girl, and Uno.
Kieran: You have your new EP ‘Static Separation’ coming out on Feb 6th, and we’re curious, what was done differently whilst creating this body of work?
Lewis: We were really conscious of writing within the world we wanted to create for this EP. The sonic palette being used, the melodies, Maxim’s lyricism, all of it is thought about within the context of the themes and ideas that define for us what each of these tracks are trying to say and do. Not that ‘Head Leaking’ didn’t come out a similar way, but it was more deliberate this time. It’s all contained within a crunchy little capsule.
Kieran: Can you talk us through the recording process of the EP?
Lewis: We dedicated a few days to each song which allowed us to get fully lost in the world of each one. How we give them identity by themselves, how we link them together. This was a double edged sword – many downward spirals, many rabbit holes in the wrong direction, a bit of panicking when we thought we’d wasted a day chasing the wrong thing. Maxim and I would be non-verbal at the back of the room thinking we’d fucked the entire song, reliably by about 3pm every day. James Dring, our producer, would be laughing at us from the desk because he’d seen this happen every day so far. All ideas are good ideas though. Even the bad ones. So you’ve got to explore it all.
Kieran: Are there any particular songs that you have a strong attachment to? If so, what tracks and why?
Lewis: Again and Again. I’d been in a void for a long time, and then the idea came out one evening very quickly and sort of snapped me out of it and made me feel alive again. It was very cathartic.
Kieran: Were there any particular artists or people who inspired the forthcoming release?
Lewis: Things I remember listening to a lot at the time:
The Replacements
Deerhunter
Steph Chura
Caroline Polachek
Steve Miller Band (specifically Circle of Love)
Neil Young
LCD Soundsystem
Alex G
IDLES
There were loads more.
Kieran: Lastly, what else can we expect from Terra Twin in 2025?
Lewis: More shows, more music, more rabbit holes.
