South London’s Alien Chicks announce new EP ‘Forbidden Fruit,’ out on 9th May, with new single ‘Donkeyhead’
Following previous single ‘Babe,’ Alien Chicks have dropped ‘Donkeyhead‘ ahead of their upcoming EP, ‘Forbidden Fruit‘, out on May 9th. The South London trio, known for their genre-blending mix of punk, rap, Latin, math rock, and jazz, pull us into a world of surreal satire and chaotic social critique with these two tracks.
The band’s reputation is starting to precede them. Sharing stages with the likes of English Teacher, Warmduscher, Lambrini Girls and Fat Dog and selling out headliners across London has secured their status in the scene. With a tour starting on February 15th across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe, they’ll soon be spreading their name—and the word about their upcoming EP—far beyond the capital.
So far, they’ve released the single ‘Babe,’ a sharp critique of a world weighed down by inherited failures. The track thrived on shifting intensities, veering between raucous eruptions and quieter sections in manner that would almost give you whiplash. It’s a fun record with something serious to say.
And now for something completely different: ‘Donkeyhead‘. This brilliant oddball concoction is reminiscent of the operatic rock of HMLTD’s record ‘The Worm‘, played with a tongue firmly in its cheek. Lead vocalist Josef Lindsay explains that “part of ‘Donkeyhead‘ was a fever dream” about a home invasion, one which somehow meanders into a rant about the lack of bins in North London.
Beneath the playful paranoia, the track’s punk softens to reveal its jazzy undercurrents—brief flashes of calm in the storm. The sounds of prog, 90’s alt-rock and hardcore swing through this noisy playground.
Alien Chicks aren’t here to reinvent their chaos—they’re here to own it. The punk that drives their sound hasn’t gone anywhere and the experimentations that push it further keep on coming. If ‘Babe‘ and ‘Donkeyhead‘ are any indication, ‘Forbidden Fruit‘ promises to be a great record—and you can bet I’ll be counting down the days until its release.
