GUV’s latest single, ‘Warmer Than Gold’, lands with the comfort of one of those tracks that feels instantly familiar. Created in collaboration with James Matthew Seven, Darcy Baylis, Hatchie, and Meg Mills (Turnstile), the song extends Ben Cook’s sonic vocabulary while sharpening its emotional clarity. What results is a radiant piece of indie-pop that glows from the inside out.
From the first wash of guitar, ‘Warmer Than Gold’s‘ opening chords shimmer with a Cure-like translucence. The tempo and swagger stake out its influences, echoing Oasis and Primal Scream. Yet GUV steers the track’s energy somewhere brighter and more grounded, rooting us firmly in the now.
The song moves with the sensation of navigating a landscape. The production leans into this fluid, warm distortion that feels deliberately shaped. It’s britpop-psychedelic at its most inviting with Cook’s dreamscape vocals, luminous and airbrushed around the edges. He sings as though halfway between memory and present tense, landing each phrase in a way that adds to the track’s impressionistic quality.
‘Warmer Than Gold’ radiates exactly the kind of emotional temperature it promises, smothering you with a sway that sits nicely against the foot-tapping groove. It’s impossible not to picture the song drifting across a UK festival crowd on a golden hour summer afternoon.
Beneath all of this lies a deeper emotional register. There’s a universal hug that feels like reassurance. Cook sounds less like he’s reaching for something than like he’s returning to it; it sounds like he’s arrived home.
