Master Peace’s latest track is a fast-paced ray of sunshine whilst also tackling vulnerabilities and featuring Declan McKenna.

Master Peace has been on a one-way journey to top in recent times as his ‘Stupid Kids‘ EP has come together through a string of singles. The latest in this line-up is the formidable ‘Fuck It Up‘, featuring vocal and production input from non other than indie darling Declan McKenna.

From the get-go, ‘Fuck It Up‘ hits you like a ray of sunshine. The track is fast-paced and almost tricks you into letting your guard down, expecting a light-hearted, cheery listen. What actually follows is Peace laying his vulnerabilities on the line, connoting his oh-so-relatable self-destructive tendencies and struggles with ADHD. Though, thatโ€™s not to say the lyrical content dampens the mood – thereโ€™s a strange comfort in the admiration for this openness the audience fosters and perhaps finds comfort in. The track offers space for self-reflection, awareness of perhaps how much we consider ourselves to โ€˜Fuck it upโ€™, and an invitation to go a little easier on ourselves.

Peace dives further into his mind as the track progresses, stating โ€˜ADHD got a hold on meโ€™, before rapidly switching to a longing for a partner so they can โ€˜fuck it upโ€™ together. Whether intentional or not, the track offers an insight to a unique and seldomly-explored concept: that of neurodivergence’s impact on relationship dynamics and its influence on the foundations of its structure. How many relationships, perhaps, exist only for this longed-for comfort of having a partner in crime? Someone to share the blame for our actions and find sanctuary from ourselves within?ย

This concept is explored further as McKenna enters the track, acting as Peaceโ€™s inner monologue: โ€œYou should probably get out of bed – I just live in a dreamโ€. The track was originally produced without him, so itโ€™s an interesting reflection of where he is at artistically that he felt moved enough to contribute to the track. Though never publicly stating he suffers from ADHD, he seems to understand well a battle with oneโ€™s internal monologue and the way in which it colludes the ongoings of one’s mind. Itโ€™s his first official release in almost a year, since an appearance on Adele Castillonโ€™sIt might never end‘ with Videoclub. We can only hope this appearance is the first of much musical content to come this year.

Overall, ‘Fuck It Up‘ is a stellar track. You can catch Master Peace in London and Birmingham supporting Good Neighbours.
