CLUNK Recommends | Ugly Ozo – hi, how are you?

Ugly Ozo’s latest track ‘hi, how are you?’ features entrancing vocals and is an exciting follow up from her 2025 EP, ‘stargirl’.

Hailing from the Isle of Wight, Ugly Ozo is the project of Jessica Baker follows in the footsteps of local bands such as Wet Leg and Coach Party, as she continues in her musical journey that started in 2019 and was solidified by her first release in 2024. In fact, it would not be unfair at all to say she sits comfortably between both bands sonically, with a sound that sits on the fence between indie pop-rock and something a great deal heavier.

New single ‘hi, how are you?’ certainly leans towards the heavier side of this spectrum, though it features the very same mellifluous vocals featured on some of her lighter tunes. The track begins with entrancing vocals, echoed by a strange looping sound behind Baker’s voice. She begins to sing over atmospheric guitars before the song launches into a powerful vocal-led chorus filled with layers of rock guitar.

After returning to the vocals from the start once more, this is repeated, except this time with a short guitar bridge before the last chorus. Baker’s vocals and these guitars work off each other seamlessly, each taking the spotlight before the other in turn. The last chorus is bookended with guitar segments, and the track is closed out with the same bewitching vocals heard at the start. Perhaps her most interesting and danceable track yet, ‘hi, how are you?’ sounds somewhat typical of the current British indie scene, but at the same time remains unique.
