Did a sports journalism degree, write about music instead. Used to sing, now you can find me either at a gig or in the pub in the centre of the universe – Leeds.
Isle of Wight icons Wet Leg continue a formidable album campaign with the sweetly sharp, Big Brother inspired ballad, ‘davina mccall’
Fresh from arriving back in everyone’s hearts with a sucker punch via ‘catch these fists’ and ‘CPR’, the new-look-duo-turned-five-piece have unleashed a particularly solemn sound to accompany the lead singles of their upcoming sophomore record – ‘moisturizer‘.
The band manage to evoke genuine melancholy whilst also shoehorning in a signature silliness through lines such as ‘I’ll be your Shakira/Wherever, Whenever’ – I suppose no one quite expected a song named after British television royalty to be quite so emotional, they could not be entirely serious.
‘davina mccall’ is, despite the obscure titling, Wet Leg at their best. Showing they ain’t no one trick pony, the band lean into a subtler, more relaxed, romantic vibe and, in doing so, create a gorgeous indie-rock feeling.
Far from your generic love song, maybe obvious from being named after a game show host with a claymation music video, ‘davina’ is wonderfully catchy, weirdly danceable, and quintessentially Wet Leg, whilst also proving their ability at this stage in their career. There will be no second album syndrome here.
