CLUNK Recommends | World News – The Way It Goes

Music journalist and photographer based in Cardiff (for now). Just trying to write about music that moves me in someway. If you do wish to find me though, I’ll usually be tucked away listening to music, talking to an animal on the street like a modern day Snow White or at a gig somewhere!

World News bring a touch of eighties nostalgia with ‘The Way It Goes’ ahead of their debut album releasing October 16th.

There is a certain kind of magic in songs that make you want to twirl around your bedroom, while the Manchester morning sun filters through the curtains and you can just about make out the traffic on the road near your flat. London four-piece World News have mastered that exact feeling and their latest offering, ‘The Way It Goes’, feels like a warm wave of pure golden hour nostalgia (and if you know me by now, you know that I love anything that feels remotely nostalgic).

Reminding me of the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Sam Fender, the track explodes with upbeat, sparkly guitars and the kind of rhythm that instantly lifts you up and has you floating out of the door ready for the day. Vocalist Alex Evans is an absolute standout, delivering effortless and emotionally resonant grit that completely has you hooked from the moment the track starts to the moment it ends.

Originally demoed back in the chaotic and claustrophobic haze of 2020, where you had to plan out daily hour walks and live life by a set of rules that feels so far removed from day to day life now … the song doesn’t force a neat narrative and it’s all the better for it.

As Alex explains: “The lyrics don’t possess too much of a story, but are more phrases, thoughts and collections of words of how I was feeling at the time.” You can feel that in this track, that almost collage of raw emotion turns scattered reflections into something that feels so anthemic.

This track acts as the perfect taste of their long awaited debut album ‘In Purgatory’, dropping October 16th (recorded at RAK Studios with producer Tommy Bosustow). Collecting 11 tracks that bridge their DIY roots (including viral hit ‘The Tinman‘ and the critically acclaimed ‘Sidestep‘) it marks a huge milestone for the band that has earned every bit of their momentum.

World News are hitting the road this autumn for their biggest tour yet, capping things off at London’s iconic Scala on November 3rd. You absolutely will be seeing me at their Manchester date! ‘The Way It Goes’ is out on all streaming platforms now – do yourself a favour and put this one on loop before you head out of the door.
