Hi I’m Saffire Williamson – a music journalist based in Cornwall: from covering the intricacies of musicality to the nightlife of Falmouth.
Hull Quartet LIFE reveal new track ‘My Yan’ ahead of fourth album release.
LIFE’s new single ‘My Yan’ encapsulates the sheer optimism associated with their band name; through gradual basslines and nods to shoegaze sounds, LIFE offers us an earnest hopefulness amongst a backdrop of nostalgia.
The opening line “I see the yan up ahead”, vocalist Mez Green’s sound amalgamating airs of The The’s ‘This is the Day‘ as well as a similar charm of the band Welly from Coventry in his tone, establishes an atmosphere of positivity within the single, or perhaps a journey of achieving said positivity. The repeated rooted hook “singing la la la la la”, the final “la” being lower in octave continues to emphasise LIFE’s distinct charm within their music, making this single entertaining to listen to as well as evoking a clear sense of anticipative joy.
As the tempo increases to a later lull and picks up again in a “la la la” infused crescendo, the track leaves us with a satisfied sense of longing; a motivation to reminisce and pursue those moments in life, those ‘Yans’, which make us feel fulfilled. Green himself stated that “This track is a love song”, perhaps the love he is talking about is an innate love and admiration for the events that happen all around us; a certain Lust For LIFE.
LIFE’s fourth album ‘ABSTRACT / NATURAL’ comes out on the 19th of June, along with an upcoming live performance on Tuesday 23rd of June at Resident (instore) in Brighton.
