I’m a journalism graduate and I run my own music blog. I have interviewed tons of different musicians and bands! I love what CLUNK offers and cannot wait to experience more of music journalism!

We caught up with The Sophs to talk about faith, accountability, character studies and turning discomfort into something worth sitting with

Centred around a narrator caught between self-reflection and self-avoidance, ‘GOLDSTAR,’ the debut album from The Sophs, opens with its title track โ€” a song about yelling at God for a sign, even while doubting whether anyoneโ€™s listening. That contradiction becomes the emotional foundation for the record.

Rather than labouring over ideas, The Sophs leaned into immediacy on ‘GOLDSTAR,’ capturing songs while they still felt raw. The band’s decision to preserve the sound of their original demos gives the album a sense of urgency, resisting the temptation to over-polish. Messy, human experiences sit at the heart of the albumโ€™s emotional palette.

GOLDSTARis described as a song about someone yelling at God for a sign โ€” how did that theme shape the rest of the album?

Ethan: Blaming a God whose existence youโ€™re unsure of for your suffering is not only the narrative launching point for GOLDSTAR, but is also a shared tactic, I believe, many of us use to shirk accountability. Itโ€™s a feeling I find uncomfortable to discuss, but necessary to give a voice to.

Youโ€™ve experimented with so many sounds โ€” from Latin sonics to Delta Blues. How would you describe the GOLDSTARalbum in your own words?

GOLDSTARis first and foremost a character study of its narrator. We wanted that to be cohesive throughout the tracklist so we could afford to have fun on the sonic side of things.

Which track on GOLDSTARwas the hardest to write or record, and why?

They all took less than a day to write and arrange.

Is there a song on the album that changed the most from its original demo to the final version?

Each song exists in its original demo form. From there, we just added live drums and mixed them.

Whatโ€™s the story behind the title GOLDSTAR โ€” and why is it the centrepiece of your debut?

I wanted the title of the album to kind of contradict its obsessively reflective contents. I wanted a physical totem to sum up all of that neurosis. An impossible star that, upon obtaining, would show the world that youโ€™re the most specialest boy there ever was.

How does fronting a band that explores the โ€œworst parts of yourselfโ€ affect your mindset during writing?

Positively. If I werenโ€™t writing and performing these feelings, I would be feeling them in private, which is way more dangerous.

Youโ€™ve referenced pulling energy from unexpected places โ€” whatโ€™s one surprising influence on this record?

Drinking. Paranoia. Shame. Los Angeles. Love. The homeless.

Youโ€™ve got festival appearances from SXSW to Primavera โ€” how do you prepare mentally and musically for such different crowds?

I think weโ€™re just excited to do it. Playing in front of new audiences is one of the only surefire ways to gain fans. And fans are how we eat.

Which song from GOLDSTAR are you most excited to play live for the first time, and why?

Weโ€™ve performed every song on the album live before, but SWEETIEPIE is a favourite.

Debut album ‘GOLDSTAR’ is out on 13th March 2026 via Rough Trade Records.
