Australian punks Amyl and the Sniffers hit hard with their latest singles ‘U Should Not Be Doing That’ and ‘Facts’
Making a return after three years, Amyl and the Sniffers have bounced back with their latest defiant single ‘U Should Not Be Doing That’ accompanied by the B-side track, ‘Facts’. The Aussie band left us back in 2021 with their sophomore album ‘Comfort To Me’ and they’re picking things up where they left off, but somehow with even more bravado, humour and tenacity.
Reminiscent of an 80’s punk sound, the song is full of attitude as it pokes fun at the judgement lead singer Amy Taylor often gets from people for being her carefree self. As a woman in a punk band, in a very male-dominated environment, Amy gets a lot of criticism.
She clearly expresses the hate she gets in the lines “I was in Tokyo, showing off my crack, and you told me that I should not be doing that, hey I was in LA, shaking my shit, while you were down in Melbourne saying fuck that bitch.” The song is the ultimate tongue-in-cheek response to haters, full of energy that builds up to a huge crescendo of guitar towards the end.
‘Facts’ comes crashing in with the line ‘I was born, fist in my mouth, then spent my whole life gagging it out, so come on baby, don’t rob me of that.’ The line is so explicit in its direction and both songs feel very confident in their message, which is, ultimately, ‘I know who I am and I’ll do what I want.’
‘U Should Not Be Doing That’ and ‘Facts’ are a strong start to what is bound to be an exciting third album from the band.
