After meeting at an indie night in Exeter the three friends Joe Jenkins, Joe Kurzawa and Mike Slack decided to create a band. It wasn’t long before The Issues were tearing it up through the city, they were even in the run up to support Sports Team. However, the pandemic and miss rona had other ideas.
Nevertheless the band have been hard at work and dropped their latest single ‘My Ex Stacey’. It’s a classic example of an indie ballad that is filled to the brim with jangly guitars and coming of age lyricism. This is an ode to drunken stupors, falling in love (even for a brief moment) and making memories with friends. Although a retrospective sound similar to The Libertines and Jamie T it remains primed for a modern audience.
Speaking on the track Jenkins explains “This song actually was inspired by a welsh girl I met at a festival last year. We danced non-stop together for hours and then all of a sudden she disappeared and i didn’t even catch her name. I wanted this tune to sound quite ‘The Cure’-esque in the guitar section, and I’ve always loved slightly distorted vocals, hence the weird almost Strokesy vocal effect. The ending to this tune is our attempt at a musical ‘drug-fuelled’ mess, taking inspiration from Declan Mckenna and Oscar Lang.”
