Tamino honours Egyptian heritage in stunning Roundhouse performance of new album ‘Every Dawn’s A Mountain’
Following the spring release of his third album โEvery Dawnโs A Mountain,โ Tamino brought his hauntingly beautiful sound to London’s Roundhouse on 17th October, transforming the historic community venue into something resembling a cathedral for the evening.
Searows opened with a beautifully gentle set that hushed the crowd into reverent silence, her calming presence perfectly priming the audience for what would become an almost religious experience.
The iconic circular space, originally built for turning trains around, proved to be the perfect setting for the Belgian Egyptian artist’s mesmerising performance. In tribute to the building’s railway heritage and true to his usual dry humour, Tamino joked mid-set that he hoped the audience wouldn’t leave walking backwards.
The Roundhouse’s soaring ceilings and distinctive domed architecture created a sacred atmosphere, amplified by stunning light design that bathed the stage in ethereal whites and blues. The backlighting particularly enhanced Tamino’s enigmatic stage presence, casting him in silhouette during the most intimate moments and creating stunning visuals to complement his voice.
He sounds transcendent on record, but live, his vocals take on an angelic quality that defies description. From the first note of โMy Heroine,โ he had his audience hypnotised. His voice didn’t just fill the Roundhouse: it seemed to make the walls dissolve, creating the uncanny sensation of being alone in the room with him, despite the sold-out crowd.
His three-octave range cut through with crystalline clarity, even against the complex, dynamic arrangements of his exceptional live band. Switching between multiple guitars and the oud throughout his set, Tamino commanded the stage while the band brought his intricate compositions to life. His drummer was absolutely phenomenal, providing thunderous rhythm and purposeful pacing, while the cellist radiated raw emotion throughout the performance, delivering solo passages that drew audible gasps from the crowd.
One of the standout elements of Taminoโs music is the clear Arabic influence woven throughout, adding rich texture and cultural depth while honouring his Egyptian heritage. This cultural celebration culminated in the encore when Tamino performed โHabibi.โ The song felt like a homecoming for many in the audience, with numerous fans of Arabic background wearing their culture proudly and singing along with visible emotion. As the concert drew to a close, it was a beautiful reminder of music’s power to create community and celebrate heritage.
Tamino may not be one for crowd banter, but he doesn’t need it. His voice, his band, and his carefully crafted atmosphere speak volumes more than words ever could. I left the Roundhouse walking forwards, but looking back at an evening that felt touched by something transcendent.
