Jax Bowes
Based in Brighton and London, Jax is a freelance writer who has worked at Abbey Road Studios and been to more festivals than she can remember. She’s all about guitar music, tight instrumentals, heavy bass lines, and lyrics that carry real weight. She holds a BA and MA in Creative Writing and has worked on projects for the National Trust and the Bloomsbury Festival London. Inspired by cross-genre, she is drawn to the moments where music and meaning overlap.
New North London post-punk band Recruitment have released their debut single ‘Overdrawn’
Recently signed to Big Richard Records, the trio of childhood friends Jed Waldron (vocals, guitar), Tom Johnson (bass, vocals), and Shirley Graham (drums) deliver a euphonious, fast-paced sound, bringing their own unique cross-genre style.
The track’s drums introduce post-punk guitar riffs and disjointed chords as the mischievous instrumentals continue to weave into moments reminiscent of indie rock, forcing you to jump from every corner of your room.
The bassline holds the hook whilst the chorus feels familiar, like you already know the lyrics (it’s that catchy). The track relishes in the breaks and drops, reinforcing the rush; you can’t help but move to a song this lively. Jed Waldron’s vocals scratch and delight with relatable lyrics framed by serrated edges. ‘Overdrawn‘ breaks convention with its fusion of sound from multiple influences.
The track sound like The Libertines were served a cocktail by Green Day which they shared with the Arctic Monkeys whilst being shouted at by Black Midi.
Recruitment, having only formed a year ago, bring promise to the gig scene. Their live performances deliver forceful shapes at high speed, influencing their identity and creating some much-loved disorder. Check out the dates for their London gigs HERE.
