Berlin based artist Nik Dandelion talks his love for music, good and bad of being a DIY artist, and more

Nik Dandelion recently came on to our radar with the release of his recent single ‘TRiP’, a nostalgic, Mac Demarco infused slacker-pop release. It was an instant hit with us and we were keen to chat with this illusive Nik Dandelion. Thankfully, he spared a few moments of his time to answer our questions. We chat all things DIY, new music, and more.

Kieran: Great to chat with you, how are things, Nik?

Nik: All good! I enjoyed a wonderful release show in Berlin yesterday.

Kieran: When did you first discover your love for music, and at what point did you decide to release it into the world?

Nik: It seems like my love for music has always been there, dormant but watching. One day, my father showed me the intro of “Money for Nothing” by Dire Straits and blasted it over his best speakers. That moment made me fall in love with the power of music. That experience drove me to eventually release my own music.

Kieran: Which people or artists have influenced your work?

Nik: A major influence was the first album by MGMT. Those jangly pop songs with all the trippy sound effects gave my work a new direction, coming from a background of classic folk and rock ‘n’ roll.

Kieran: You recently released your latest single, “TRiP.” Can you talk us through this release and what it means to you?

Nik: “TRiP” is one of the best songs I have released. Before we started writing it, my producer told me a story about his ex-girlfriend breaking up with him before a trip to Portugal they had planned. He asked someone else to join him so he wouldn’t lose the money he had spent. I don’t recall how it ended, but it inspired me. So, it has this weird, personal meaning for me.

Listen to ‘TRiP’ here:

Kieran: Can you talk us through the writing and recording process of this release?

Nik: It all happened very quickly, as sometimes is the case, luckily. We finished the structure in a day or so, but its time had not yet come. It didnโ€™t make its way onto the DANDY EP (2023), so it collected dust on my hard drive for over a year. I guess there is a right time for everything, isn’t there?

Kieran: What’s your favorite thing about being an independent DIY artist?

Nik: Iโ€™m signed to the ST.VLADIMIR label but still consider myself a DIY artist because I make almost all the creative decisions myself, including the mix, artwork, and videos. It brings me joy to create.

Kieran: And what are the downsides?

Nik: Finding the motivation when nobody is there to give you a push.

Kieran: Lastly, what else can we expect from you in 2024?

Nik: Lots of great things <3
