We speak to the Norwich based Youth Killed It about how they met, new music, and much more

Norwich, UK is famous for many reasons, one of course is the ever beloved Alan Partridge but today we’re here to talk about Youth Killed It, a fast rising indie-party-pop outfit. The band have been making an impact on the music scene with their witty, relatable, and infectious indie that is a kin to the likes of The Reytons, Kid Kapichi, and other contemporaries.

After getting our ears around their latest single ‘Up All Night’, a anarchic romp about anxiety and how bad habits creep up on you (ver relatable) we wanted to know more about these likely lads.

Kieran: Hey lads, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us! How have you all been?

YKI: Hey there, we’ve been doing well, thanks for having us!

Kieran:So, how did you all meet and at what point did you know you wanted to release music together?

YKI: We met through mutual friends with a shared passion for music. Although the lineup has evolved over the years since our formation, the core foundation remains unchanged. Our shared love for creating fun, energetic music that resonates with people, particularly in a live setting, is what drives us.

Kieran: Did you have a shared influence in music or does it vary?

YKI: Our influences vary, but we also have some common ground which helps shape our sound.

Kieran: How do your influences impact the sound of your music?

YKI: They play a big role in shaping our sound. Each of us brings something different to the table, blending our influences to create something unique. For example, we draw inspiration from the 2000s indie scene, modern music, and 90s dance music. You can hear these influences reflected in our songwriting and Jack’s (Vocals) production techniques.

Kieran: Are there any particular artists you look up to? If so, who and why?

YKI: We look up to a range of artists who have made an impact in their own way. Their creativity and authenticity inspire us to push boundaries in our own music. Bands like The Reytons, Kid Kapichi, and The Lottery Winners have been particularly influential from a recent point of view. They’re smashing it, selling out shows, producing great music, and engaging content. Jamie T is also a big inspiration for the band; his vocal delivery and lyrical content resonate with us. Additionally, bands like Sticky Fingers, Kasabian, and heavier acts like Enter Shikari, The Prodigy have left their mark on our musical journey. Oh, and Joel is a massive Phil Collins fan! But then again, name a drummer who isnโ€™t?

Kieran: You just dropped your latest single ‘Up All Night’, can you talk us through the meaning of this release?

YKI: The inspiration for ‘Up All Night’ comes from Jack’s battle with anxiety. It’s a personal track that captures his journey of facing his demons head-on and pushing forward despite the struggles. For Jack, this song is about cracking on, confronting his fears, and ultimately finding resilience in the face of his challenges.

Listen/watch ‘Up All Night’ here:

Kieran: When writing and recording this track did you do anything different to previous releases?

YKI: For this track, Jack experimented with some new production techniques. During songwriting sessions and recording, we listened to a lot of 90s dance music. You can kind of hear it in the verses and chorus. Up and down sections and the repeated lyrics in the chorus. The music for the song actually changed quite a bit until the final mix. Jack added a new riff, which then became the main hook.

Kieran: Can we expect more releases such as this throughout 2024?

YKI: Absolutely! We’ve got some exciting stuff in the pipeline for 2024, so stay tuned for more!

Kieran: Lastly, as a touring band I am sure you have plenty of stories about life as a band on the road, can you give us one?

YKI: If you give us a follow on TikTok, you’ll find out firsthand ๐Ÿ˜‰ (shameless plug – @youthkilledit)
