Brighton based Baby Gem releases confident and cathartic indie rock debut single ‘Tiptoe‘
Genre-blending quintet Baby Gem’s debut track ‘Tiptoe‘ is the pure confrontation of self-respect; a musical realisation of the empowering awareness one encounters after having their individuality and strength stripped on someone else’s accord.
Through their offering of heavy, layered instrumentation – yet balanced and simultaneously juxtaposed through Tula Gartmayerโs passionate vocals – Baby Gem perfectly conveys that anxious, people-pleasing feeling of being trapped in a toxic relationship. However, arguably more importantly, this single shows how you must become aware of this behaviour and learn, particularly as a woman, how to get yourself out of a narcissistic patriarchal situation and never “tiptoe over (a manโs) ego.“
The operatic echoing of the unaccompanied vocals in the initial position of the song seems as though it couldโve been recorded in an empty church or grand hall – creating an idea of singular performance, similar to which one may experience when in a relationship of toxicity. Performance to the significant other, performance to your peers of a pseudo-stability, and perhaps even performance to yourself that the situation youโre in is acceptable.
As the single moves through the waves of bridging basslines and unapologetic drum instrumentation (courtesy of Max Valencia and James Virtu), weโre left with a feeling of tranquility; a consoling calm-after-the-storm, signifying the relief and dignity that emerges after the strain of keeping someone else, or their affectatious ego, afloat as your individuality drowns.ย
Baby Gemโs new single is a musical aid to give those strained a means to escape – and they execute it perfectly.
