‘Coming On Strong’ will feature on Bloc Party’s upcoming album ‘Anatomy Of A Brief Romance’ and promises to be some of the band’s most personal work.
‘Coming On Strong’ will feature as the second track on what will be Bloc Party’s seventh album. However, ‘Anatomy Of A Brief Romance’ promises many firsts, in an album that is set to showcase some of Kele Okereke’s most personal songs he has ever written. He says, “Every lyric you’re hearing on this record was something that actually happened to me. I had to tell the story, from start to finish.”
Set against the backdrop of turmoil in Okereke’s life, ‘Coming On Strong’ is about seduction and serendipitous timing with someone. Driven by a pounding, repeating bass and Okereke’s signature echoey vocals, the track instantly places the listener between two people wanting to be intimate. As the track progresses, those ideas of proximity are played with. First is Okereke reflecting on himself outside of the sphere of intimacy- ‘I was happy as a pig in spite of myself’- and then later realising that there could be room for love and longevity. ‘I have a lover and I have a friend. He’s the one I can chill with.’
There is a darkness to this track as well. Psychedelic clangs are overlayed the vocals and there is a haunting grungy hook that emphasises danger. “I like the fact that harmonically and musically, it feels dark, sinister, like something is creeping up,” says Okereke.
