Saffire Williamson

Hi I’m Saffire Williamson – a music journalist based in Cornwall: from covering the intricacies of musicality to the nightlife of Falmouth.

Bristol’s boci releases new single ‘CYFYC‘ prior to sophomore album ‘scenes from uniXia

boci’s new track explores ideas of personal discovery, foreboding relationships, and a longing feeling of hindsight. ‘CYFYC‘ combines elements of folk instrumentation under boci’s complex vocals, glued together amongst chilling yet romantic and expansive lyricism.

The opening chord progression was instantly reminiscent of The Rumble Strips’ Girls and Boys in Love‘ – that nostalgic sense of excitement, or perhaps naïvety, towards milestones in one’s youth. However, boci brings a much more mature angle to this in her more mellowed tempo, as though this song is an enlightened perspective of the aftermath of said naïvety; this is clearly displayed throughout the entire song.

This notion of introspection becomes even more prevalent in the chorus’s lyrics, unveiling the song title’s acronym “Can you find your centre?” – a rhetorical question to many, yet frequently asked by those attempting to find who they truly are, be that in formative years or perhaps after losing themselves in a relationship, job, or situation. The crescendo of folk-rock instrumentation (as seen in boci’s debut album ‘we are each other, this will set us free) layered with repetition of her interrogation works as a symbolic answer to her question: one of self discovery, appreciation, and grounding.

boci’s new single is a reminder this question can be answered, most commonly, by yourself.

New album ‘scenes from uniXia’ is out on 31st May.
